Tattoo Removal Questions: What to ask before treatment?

First of all, you should know what they are: cover-ups, removal creams, surgical excision, dermabrasion, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and removal lasers. Now, read on to understand how each of these techniques works.

What are the main methods of tattoo removal?

What are Cover-Ups?

Cover-ups are used when you want to cover an old tattoo with a new design, rather than erasing it. However, this procedure is not as simple as you might think. To get a satisfactory result, it's important to look for a tattoo artist who is a professional in the cover-up procedure.

The tattoo artist will incorporate a new design into the old one, so that the old one disappears. The tattooist must be very careful when carrying out the procedure, as some inks cannot overlap others.

This is one of the most effective tattoo removal methods and is generally less painful. They can also be cheaper than other techniques.

How do tattoo removal creams work?

Tattoo removal creams may not be the best option for your treatment. These creams will at best fade the tattoo, however there are people who have achieved good results using them.

If you opt for this type of treatment, be careful when carrying out the sessions, as abuse or incorrect use can lead to burns, skin irritation and scarring.

What is Excision? (surgery to remove)

The best option for this technique are small tattoos in places where there is plenty of skin. The dermatologist or plastic surgeon will completely remove the tattoo from your body (using a scalpel) and close it with surgical stitches. Sounds painful, right? But it's not, you'll be anesthetized and feel almost no pain.

The advantages of this technique are that, for small tattoos, the procedure can be done in just one session. In other words, fewer visits to the doctor and generally lower prices than laser treatment.

The biggest disadvantage of having this procedure is that you will get a new scar. If you don't like scars or are prone to hypertrophic scars (keloids), this is not the best option for you. The excision method can also be used to remove larger tattoos, but will require more visits to the clinic and possibly grafts.

Excisions are a certainty to have the tattoo removed completely; however, it is usually replaced by a scar.

What is Dermabrasion?

The dermabrasive technique consists of mechanically exfoliating the skin using manual or electric sandpaper. The results are roughly the same as those achieved using creams. This is because dermabrasion only removes the surface layer of the skin, it cannot reach the dermis (the layer where the tattoo inks are deposited).

What is IPL - Intense Pulsed Light for tattoo removal?

IPL is a form of light (not laser) that uses multiple wavelengths all at once, and its acronym stands for intense pulse light. This technique is also not the most efficient in tattoo removal, what can occur is a fading of the tattoo.

Beware, this technique often causes frightening rejections in the patient, such as blisters and burns. This technique causes a lot of collateral damage compared to other tattoo removal methods.

What is laser tattoo removal? How does it work?

Laser treatments are considered the most effective way to have a tattoo completely removed. Lasers penetrate directly into the skin and aim to reach only the ink pigments, without damaging the surrounding skin.

The wave generated by the laser fragments the ink particles, which are then absorbed by the body. The laser tattoo removal process is slow, so don't expect your tattoo to be removed overnight.

Some patients show the first results after 3 sessions. However, it is necessary to wait between 30 and 45 days for each session. This is to allow the skin to heal. The cost of an average laser removal session starts at R$300 but can easily exceed this amount.

Even though it is the most recommended by specialists, there are some risks behind the laser method. As you may have realized, the method is long, not so cheap, painful and, in some cases, the tattoo may not be completely removed.
