Laser Tattoo Removal: How does it work, what are the costs and risks?

Laser Tattoo Removal

Removing a tattoo is not a simple or easy task, and it is also an expensive treatment. There are many methods of removing an unwanted design from the skin, but the technique most recommended by specialists is laser tattoo removal.

However, the laser is not the only technique for carrying out the procedure. In some cases, the best option is to perform a cover-up, i.e. to make a tattoo on top of the one you already have on your body. In others, tattoo removal surgery can be used. In this case, it is only recommended for small tattoos as the method used leaves scars.

There are countless reasons why people remove tattoos from their bodies. Perhaps it's because you got it a long time ago and the design no longer makes sense in your life, because of a new job opportunity, you don't like the tattoo anymore, it was a rash decision, you name it.

However, if you really want to remove it, you'll need a lot of patience and time for the treatment to be carried out and for you to be satisfied at the end of the treatment.

How to remove a tattoo with a laser?

The first thing to do is to go to a doctor or clinic that specializes in tattoo removal, so that you can clear up all your doubts about laser treatment, from prices, deadlines, the possible risks of removing a tattoo or whatever your doubts may be.

Research different clinics, about three or four, before making any decisions, so that you can find out the best points of each one and choose the best one for you.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

The inks used to draw a tattoo are made up of heavy metals. Through the needles, the ink passes through the epidermis and is deposited in the dermis. As soon as the ink is deposited, our body identifies the substance as an intruder and tries to eliminate it using white blood cells.

However, because white blood cells are much smaller than paint pigments, they can't completely expel it. They even try to phagocytize the ink particles, but it's not enough for complete removal. This is why tattoos often fade but remain on the skin.

It's true that ink pigments are difficult to remove because they are larger, which is why you need a laser to remove them completely. But not just any laser - you need a laser with the right wavelength for that color.

To remove a tattoo with a laser, the equipment must be set to the correct intensity and then fired at the tattoo. The light wave is able to break up the ink particles into small pieces so that it is easier for the white blood cells to eat the ink.

Basically, the laser gives our immune system a helping hand to remove the dye from our body.

How much does it cost to remove a tattoo with a laser?

This factor varies according to the size of the tattoo, the colors, where it is located and, of course, the laser equipment that will be used for the treatment. There are different types of lasers for this purpose and each one is essential for removing a certain range of colors. It may be that two or more devices are used in your treatment.

In some clinics it's possible to find treatment sessions for R$300.00, but it can be as much as R$2,000.00. As said before, laser removal treatment is not cheap.

What are the risks of laser tattoo removal?

Even though laser treatment is considered one of the best options for tattoo removal, there are still risks involved, which can permanently mark the skin. The most common side effects are

Hyperpigmentation and Hypopigmentation

This effect is the change in pigmentation of the area where the laser has been applied, and occurs especially in people with darker skin. When undergoing treatment, the body sometimes responds by producing too much or too little melanin.

When treated skin becomes darker than untreated skin, this is called hyperpigmentation. When it becomes lighter, it is called hypopigmentation. These effects are temporary and in a few months the skin returns to its normal color.

Skin sensitivity

Undoubtedly, the technique of breaking down the ink pigments in the skin using the laser will have side effects on your skin. Burning, swelling, sensitivity and redness are common after treatment. Bruising and blistering can also occur. While the area is healing, there is also the possibility of increased infection risks.

Symptoms disappear over time as the treated area heals completely.

Scars

Scarring can also occur. Fortunately, this happens in very few cases. Post-treatment is essential to avoid this problem.

Scarring is not common with laser tattoo removal, but as we mentioned above, blisters and bruises can appear. And we know that if not looked after properly, blisters can result in permanent scars.
